Abstract

Among the main metapsychological works that Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) outlined in 1915, the concept of Narcissism, formulated in Introduction to narcissism (1914), stands out for reflecting the nefarious condition of the warlike man, in his refusal to see the other . Thus, when reinterpreting the Greek myth, Freud notes, in Narcissus, what the young man denied in himself, that is, his annihilating selfishness. Meanwhile, from this Freudian (re) reading, we intend to analyze the short story "The woman in the mirror - A reflection", by the English writer Virgínia Woolf (1929), observing the subjective functioning of Isabella Tyson, a character framed by loneliness. In the short story, we follow the description of the character in his home, from the static look of his mirror exposed in the house, the only witness of the isolation that invades the environment. Thus, oblivious to others and to herself, the protagonist remains accompanied only by the echoing voice of silence, until the amazing moment in which she is faced with her own reflection. In this (re) knowledge, we witness the petrified image of Narcissus and his devastating power. In fact, crossed by this diagram, we intend to open up the enigmas that underlie the narrative, based on the theory developed by Freud (1915) and his predecessors Klein (1957) and Segal (1990).
